A Durango Local's Denver Wellness Weekend

For a lot of Durango residents, "quick trip to Denver" is code for something specific: DEN for a real flight schedule, a Costco run, a specialist appointment nobody in La Plata County offers, maybe a show. It's five and a half hours over Wolf Creek or Monarch Pass, or a short hop out of the Durango-La Plata County Airport with a connection through Denver. Either way, once the trip is happening, it's worth getting more out of it than a rental-car return receipt. Here's how locals turn the errand run into an actual reset weekend, based in Cherry Creek.

Why Durango goes to Denver

DRO's flight map is small — mostly Denver and Phoenix, with seasonal routes that come and go. Anyone flying somewhere DRO doesn't reach connects through DEN, which means a lot of Durangoans already pass through the Front Range a few times a year without planning to. Add the errands only a real city has — a proper mall, a full REI, a specialist your primary care doctor referred you to, a prescription pickup that requires an in-person visit, a concert at Red Rocks or Ball Arena — and the trip north stops being an inconvenience and starts being a reason to stay an extra night.

There's also the simple fact that Durango is a small market. Great for a lot of things, but it doesn't support every specialty business a resident might eventually need — certain medical specialists, certain retailers, certain aesthetic providers. Denver fills that gap by default, whether the trip was planned around it or not.

Getting there and getting settled

If you're flying, DRO to DEN is a short hop, and a rideshare gets you into Cherry Creek in under 30 minutes depending on traffic. Driving over Wolf Creek Pass on US-160 or Monarch Pass on US-50 both work; check conditions before a winter trip either way; a spring storm on either pass can turn a five-hour drive into a much longer one. Give yourself a buffer day if the forecast looks unsettled.

Cherry Creek North puts you walking distance from the shopping district, a dense stretch of coffee and dinner options, and a short rideshare from downtown if the show or the flight pulls you that direction. It's quieter than LoDo at night and easier to park in than most of central Denver — a real consideration if you drove over the pass instead of flying and still have a car to deal with.

Coffee, errands, and the pace of a real city

Start slow. Cherry Creek has the kind of coffee shop density Main Avenue can't match. Grab something with oat milk that isn't a 20-minute wait, then knock out the errand list while the espresso machines are still warming up elsewhere. Mid-morning is the window for Ikea, the Container Store, or whatever specialty retailer doesn't have a Durango outpost. A big-box grocery run before the drive home isn't a bad idea either — some pantry staples just cost less and come in more variety than the options at 6,500 feet. Save the afternoon for the part of the trip that actually resets you.

The Cherry Creek stop: Nurture Wellness & Aesthetics

A weekend built entirely around errands is still just errands, unless you build in something for yourself. Nurture Wellness & Aesthetics, at 90 Madison St in Cherry Creek, is a nurse practitioner-led med spa offering injectables, dermal fillers, CO2 laser skin treatments, microneedling, and medical weight-loss support — the kind of provider-led, consultation-first care a small mountain town's provider pool doesn't stretch to cover. Their approach leans on individualized treatment plans rather than a one-size menu, which matters if you're coming from out of town and want the visit to actually be worth the drive.

If it's your first visit, book a consultation before a treatment appointment. A med spa worth its license will want to see you and talk through options before recommending anything, and building that consultation into your Friday afternoon leaves Saturday open for the treatment itself if one is scheduled.

Coming home

Two days is enough to fold in a real reset without losing the trip to errands entirely: coffee, the shopping list, one appointment that's just for you, and the drive back over the pass with everything checked off. Time it right and you're back in Durango by Sunday evening with the car full of things the town doesn't sell and a weekend that felt like more than a supply run. If you'd rather keep the whole thing closer to home, the day trips from Durango guide covers the closer options, and a weekend in Durango is the version of this itinerary that never leaves town.
