Sky Ute Casino and Ute Mountain Casino Near Durango

Durango has no casino. Two tribal casinos sit within driving range, though, and they make very different trips. Sky Ute Casino Resort in Ignacio is about 29 miles and 45 minutes southeast of downtown, while Ute Mountain Casino Hotel near Towaoc is about 57 miles and 75 minutes west, close to Mesa Verde and Four Corners. The Southern Ute Indian Tribe owns Sky Ute. The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe owns Ute Mountain. Both floors stay open 24 hours a day. Everything below comes from each casino's own website, read in October 2026, plus a routed drive time for each trip, and where a casino's pages disagree with each other we say so instead of picking a number.

Which casinos are near Durango, Colorado?

Only two. Colorado permits casino gaming in three old mining towns near Denver and Colorado Springs, plus on tribal land in the state's southwest corner, according to Uncover Colorado's statewide casino guide. That leaves Sky Ute and Ute Mountain as the only choices inside Colorado for a Durango trip.

  • Sky Ute Casino Resort, 14324 Highway 172 North, Ignacio, CO 81137. Phone 970-563-7777. Closest to Durango.
  • Ute Mountain Casino Hotel, 3 Weeminuche Drive, Towaoc, CO 81334. Phone 970-565-8800. Farther, but the better base for Mesa Verde and Four Corners.

How do Sky Ute and Ute Mountain compare?

Sky Ute is closer and has more to do besides gamble. Ute Mountain has the bigger slot floor, the bigger bingo hall and a sportsbook. This table puts the two side by side, as posted on each casino's website in October 2026.

Two details in that table deserve a closer look. Call 970-563-7777 before you plan a trip around sports betting. Ute Mountain's own pages give three different slot counts, so treat the number as "roughly 650 to 700."

How far is each casino from Durango?

Sky Ute is the near one. These drive times come from OpenStreetMap routing from the Durango depot area, with no traffic, snow or construction built in.

TripDistanceDrive time
Durango to Sky Ute Casino Resort, Ignacio28.7 miles46 minutes
Durango to Ute Mountain Casino Hotel, Towaoc57.4 miles75 minutes
Sky Ute to Ute Mountain82.7 miles2 hours
Durango to Farmington, NM (for Northern Edge)52.4 miles75 minutes

Sky Ute describes itself as "20 minutes south of Durango," and its RV park page says 22 miles. Our routed figure is longer, so allow most of an hour in winter. Ute Mountain's drive is US-160 west to Cortez, then US-491 south. If you are flying in, our getting to Durango guide covers the airport, which Sky Ute says is a 15-minute drive from the casino.

Can you reach a Durango-area casino without a car?

For Sky Ute, yes, on weekdays only. Road Runner Transit runs a fixed route between the Durango Transit Center, Bayfield and Ignacio, Monday through Friday. Per the Durango to Ignacio schedule, the morning bus leaves the Durango Transit Center at 10:00 AM and reaches the Ignacio Library at 10:40 AM. Sky Ute Casino is a request stop on that run, so tell the driver or call 970-563-4545.

The ride back is the catch. The Ignacio to Durango schedule lists Sky Ute Casino at 8:45 AM and 5:10 PM, arriving at the Durango Transit Center at 6:10 PM. So a day trip works if you catch the 10:00 AM bus down and the 5:10 PM bus home. The fare page lists $6 between any two towns. The service changed in April 2026, so confirm the times before you go.

We found no public bus and no casino shuttle for Ute Mountain, and neither casino's website lists a shuttle from Durango. Plan on driving or hiring a ride.

What are the differences in games?

The biggest gap is table games. Sky Ute deals them only Thursday through Sunday, with a $1/$2 blind hold'em cash game starting at 3 PM on those nights. Ute Mountain lists a wider set, including Ultimate Texas Hold'em, craps and a live poker table, and its slot floor includes an 80-machine smoking room called Summit Slots.

Both run regular bingo sessions, on different nights.

Bring photo ID to either hall. Ute Mountain's bingo page says its birthday offer also needs a Social Security card, so ask the cashier what a promotion requires.

Which casino should you pick?

Pick by what else is on your day.

  • Pick Sky Ute if you want a short drive from Durango, a bowling alley for kids, a steakhouse dinner or a hotel stay close to town.
  • Pick Ute Mountain if you want the sportsbook, a bingo hall it bills as the area's largest or a night near Mesa Verde.
  • Avoid Monday to Wednesday at Sky Ute if you want table games. They are closed those days.
  • Traveling with kids? Sky Ute's Rolling Thunder Lanes, arcade and mini golf are family attractions. Games run $3 to $5 plus shoe rental, and the lanes open at 2 PM on Mondays and Tuesdays. The gaming floors are for adults.

What else is near Sky Ute?

The Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum sits half a mile from the casino, by the museum's own count. It opens Tuesday through Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM. Adults pay $8. Elders (55 and up) and veterans pay $4. Students and children 3 to 17 pay $2. Go if you want context on the tribe that owns the casino. Holiday hours are a phone call away at 970-563-9583. The museum's visitor page also adds Chimney Rock National Monument, 33 miles off, and the town of Pagosa Springs, and back on the Durango side our train guide and hot springs guide can fill out the rest of the day.

What else is near Ute Mountain?

Ute Mountain is the better base for sightseeing. Its visitor page steers guests toward Mesa Verde National Park, Four Corners Monument, the Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Park, the Cortez Cultural Center and the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center.

By our routing, Four Corners Monument is about 28 miles from the casino, a 36-minute drive. Mesa Verde's park entrance is roughly 30 miles away, about 50 minutes. Our guides cover both: Mesa Verde from Durango and the Four Corners Monument trip. Many visitors use the casino hotel as a one-night base so they can see both without driving back to Durango.

Are there other casinos within about three hours?

One more that we could verify. Northern Edge Navajo Casino at 2752 Indian Service Road 36, Farmington, New Mexico, is run by the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise. It lists nearly 750 slot machines and table games including blackjack, craps, roulette, mini-baccarat and Pai Gow poker. Casino hours are Monday to Thursday 8 AM to 4 AM, Friday and Saturday around the clock, and Sunday until 4 AM. Farmington is 52 miles and about 75 minutes from Durango by our routing, and the casino itself adds a little more. Phone 505-960-7000.

New Mexico sets its own rules. Check Northern Edge's website for age and hours before you drive that far.

What should you know about responsible gaming?

Gambling is entertainment that costs money, and nothing on a casino floor is a way to earn it. If it stops being fun, help is free and private. The National Council on Problem Gambling's helpline, 1-800-MY-RESET, takes calls, texts and web chat at 1800myreset.org. In Colorado, the Problem Gambling Coalition of Colorado lists a local number, 303-955-4682.

Sky Ute offers a voluntary self-exclusion program, and its responsible gaming page links to Gamblers Anonymous and other support groups. Sky Ute's page still shows the older 1-800-GAMBLER number, so use the national council's current line above if that one does not connect.

How we compared them

We used four checks any reader can repeat: road distance from downtown Durango, what each casino posts about rooms, games and hours, what the transit agency and the museum post for themselves, and whether a casino's own pages agree with each other. We did not rate payouts or service quality, and neither casino paid for a mention.
