Purgatory Lodging: Slopeside vs Durango, Compared

The closest Purgatory lodging is the resort's own village. Purgatory Lodge, Purgatory Village condos and Sheol Street Lodging all sit a 2 to 5 minute walk from the lifts, and some units are ski-in/ski-out. Cascade Village is 2 miles north, Tamarron is about 9 miles south, and downtown Durango is 25 miles south on U.S. 550. The resort's biggest early-season lodging deal, 30% off four nights, was listed as ending October 31, 2026.

Every fact below comes from the resort, the property managers or the owners' associations, checked in October 2026. Nightly rates are not posted anywhere. Purgatory prices each stay by date at checkout, so the price cells in the table say "Not listed" instead of guessing.

What are the lodging options at Purgatory?

There are six real choices, and the resort's own lodging page and amenities page cover four of them. All of these units are privately owned. No two are alike, so ask about the specific unit.

A few details that change a decision:

  • Purgatory Lodge opened in 2008 and anchors the village base. The resort calls it luxury ski-in/ski-out, with Purgy's Restaurant and Bar in the building. Lodge 202 has a fireplace, a washer and dryer, and no air conditioning.
  • Rental program perks apply to units booked through the resort. These include a heated outdoor pool with a waterslide, a hot tub, a fitness center, free Wi-Fi, free parking and a 24-hour front desk.
  • Black Bear 98 is a three-bedroom townhome right across the highway from the resort. Guests use the pool and hot tub at Purgatory Lodge.
  • 145 Double Diamond is a six-bedroom home that sleeps 12. Its listing recommends a 4x4 vehicle in winter because of the steep mountain grade.
  • Cascade Village is at 50827 U.S. 550, about 28 miles from downtown Durango, per its booking site. The Cascade Village HOA says the county keeps the road to it clear of snow. Purgatory's transportation page lists a round-trip guest shuttle between the two.
  • Tamarron is a mix of individually owned condos around The Lodge, a five-story building with 139 units. Durango Vacation Rentals at Tamarron is one local manager. The Glacier Club next door is a private membership club, so it is not a place you can book.

Should you stay slopeside or in Durango?

Stay slopeside if skiing is the whole trip. Stay in Durango if the town is half the trip. The drive is the price of that choice, and it is bigger than most visitors expect.

Here is the cost in miles and minutes for a four-day ski trip, one round trip per ski day:

BaseOne-way distanceDrive per ski dayFour ski days
Purgatory Village2-5 minute walkNoneAbout 0 miles
Cascade Village2 miles northShort; guest shuttle at set timesAbout 16 miles
TamarronAbout 9 miles south (about 10 minutes)About 20 minutes round tripAbout 72 miles, 80 minutes
Downtown Durango25 miles south60 to 90 minutes round tripAbout 200 miles, 4 to 6 hours

The minutes for Tamarron come from its manager's listing on Visit Durango. The Durango range of 30 to 45 minutes each way is ours. Sources vary, and a snowy morning pushes you to the long end.

Pick the slopeside village if:

  • You have kids in lessons and want a midday break at the room.
  • You plan to ski first chair on powder mornings.
  • You would rather cook than eat out every night.

Pick Durango if:

  • You want dinner and a pint on Main Avenue after skiing.
  • Your group is split between skiers and non-skiers.
  • You are only skiing one or two days of a longer trip.

Pick Cascade Village or Tamarron if you want a quieter base with more space per dollar and can live with a short drive or a scheduled shuttle. For the full neighborhood picture, see our where to stay in Durango guide and the cabins and vacation rentals comparison.

How hard is the drive from Durango to Purgatory in winter?

Purgatory is 25 miles up U.S. 550, and every mile of it climbs. The resort base sits at 8,793 feet, roughly 2,300 feet above Durango. A wet street downtown can mean a snowy highway at the top. Look at COtrip before you leave, and carry traction or winter tires.

If you would rather not drive, Purgatory's transportation page lists these options:

  • Skier shuttle: $20 per ride, with pickups at the Durango Transit Center (7:50 am), 24th St. at Durango High (8:00 am), PJ's Gourmet Market (8:15 am) and Tamarron (8:30 am). Returns leave the mountain between about 4:45 and 5:30 pm. The page says service begins December 20.
  • Airport transfer: One way from Durango-La Plata County Airport costs a $150 minimum for 1 to 2 passengers, then $50 each for 3 to 4. The airport is about 50 minutes from the resort.
  • Free resort shuttles: Parking-lot and homeowner shuttles run 8:00 am to 5:00 pm every operating day.

That page still carries a "Winter 2025-2026" parking note, so confirm the times and start date before you plan around them. Reservations are required, with 24 hours' notice.

When should you book Purgatory lodging for 2026/27?

Book now if you want a discount, and book holiday weeks first. Opening day is Friday, November 20, 2026, weather permitting, per the resort's lift ticket page. Here are the lodging deals on the resort's winter deals page in October 2026:

Passholder savings20% off 2 nights, 30% off 4 or moreThrough Apr 30, 2027; blackout Dec 18 to Jan 3Any timePremier Homes, Purgatory Lodge, In-Town Partners

Two cautions. First, the resort's home page still showed a "book by October 15th" banner for the 30% sale, while the deals page says October 31. Trust the deals page, and confirm at checkout. Second, the deepest discount excludes Purgatory Lodge, the closest ski-in/ski-out property. If that is your pick, you pay the posted rate.

The resort's pass blackout weekends, December 27 to 31, January 16 to 17 and February 13 to 14, line up with the busiest holiday periods. Snowdown, Durango's winter festival, runs January 29 to February 7, 2027, and fills in-town hotels too. Our ski-trip guide covers the dates, and the Purgatory resort guide covers the mountain itself.

How do you cut the total cost of a Purgatory ski trip?

Lodging is only one line. Three moves cover most of the savings:

  1. Ski on discounted tickets. Day tickets are priced below $50 on 95 days this season. See our Purgatory lift tickets and passes guide for the full price breakdown.
  2. Rent gear in town. Use our ski rental guide to compare shops before you pay mountain prices.
  3. Hold a pass for lodging savings. A 4-Day, 12-Day or full Power Pass cuts lodging 20% to 30% on resort-booked stays, outside blackouts.

Want a second mountain? The ski areas near Durango guide sets the options side by side. Rest days are covered in the winter tours guide.
