Purgatory Resort: 2026/27 Opening Day, Terrain, Tickets

Purgatory Resort plans to open for the 2026/27 season on Friday, November 20, 2026, weather permitting, per the resort's lift ticket page. It sits 25 miles north of Durango on U.S. Highway 550, about 30 to 45 minutes by car. The resort has over 1,600 skiable acres, 107 trails, 11 lifts and a 2,029-foot vertical drop, according to the resort. Lift tickets run $9 to $309 a day, with no window rate. This winter adds a new chairlift, the Colorado Couloir, with about 40 acres of advanced terrain.

How big is Purgatory, really?

Big enough for a week, small enough to learn. Here are the numbers, all from Purgatory's own about page unless noted.

What's new at Purgatory for 2026/27?

Three things matter, per the resort's press release as reported by SnowBrains.

• The Colorado Couloir chairlift. It opens about 40 acres of advanced and expert terrain, with five new trails and gladed tree skiing in one of the mountain's steepest areas. It also lets skiers ride to the upper mountain straight from the Gelande parking area, so the shuttle is gone.
• More snowmaking on Divinity Trail. The beginner area gets 13 acres of new coverage, which should connect beginner terrain to the base earlier in the season.
• Houston flights. United starts nonstop service between Houston and Durango on December 19, running Wednesdays and Saturdays through March 27, 2027. The airport is about 43 road miles from the resort, and our Durango airport guide puts that at an hour or more in good weather.

Who does Purgatory's terrain actually suit?

An older Visit Durango fact sheet rated the terrain 20% beginner, 45% intermediate and 35% advanced or expert. The new Colorado Couloir lift tilts that slightly toward experts. Purgatory's signature is its stair-step pitch: runs roll over a series of terraces rather than falling in one continuous plunge. That is why the mountain rewards intermediates more than almost any resort its size.

• Beginners get one of the friendliest setups in Colorado, with a dedicated learning area and real green terrain. OnTheSnow named Purgatory the No. 1 ski area for beginners in North America in its 2025-26 Visitors' Choice Awards, per the resort. Book a lesson early in the trip so the rest of it opens up.
• Intermediates own this mountain. Most of the acreage is wide, well-groomed blue terrain and mellow tree skiing.
• Advanced and expert skiers find enough to stay honest: steeper pitches, gladed tree runs, bumps and off-piste lines that get good after a storm. Come for the trees and the terraces, not for couloirs. For a truly steep day, see Silverton Mountain.
• Snowboarders and freestyle skiers get a terrain park plus plenty of natural side-hits and rollers built into the terraces.

Here is the honest trade-off. Purgatory is a place you will have a great week. It is not a place that will terrify you. For families, mixed-ability groups and intermediates, that is exactly the right mountain.

When does Purgatory open, and when does the season end?

Opening day is Friday, November 20, 2026, weather permitting, per KRQE and the resort's own ticket page. The resort has not published a closing date that we could confirm, and seasons have historically run into early April. Check before you book.

• Early season (late Nov to Dec) builds a base. Holidays are the busiest window, so the weeks on either side of Christmas give you far more mountain to yourself.

How much are Purgatory lift tickets and passes?

A day ticket costs anywhere from $9 to $309, because the price depends on the date. The range comes from the resort's season pass FAQ, which calls the daily rate "variable pricing anywhere from $9 to $309." The resort says the average price of its winter day ticket last year was $110, in its Power Pass guide. Prices rise the closer you book and track demand, the resort says. Weekdays and non-peak dates cost much less.

There is no window rate. The resort says all winter lift tickets are sold online and there is no official window price, so buying ahead is the only way to get a low one. Here is what else the resort posts:

How do you get from Durango to Purgatory?

The drive is the easy part: 25 miles up US-550, about 30 to 45 minutes from downtown Durango. In good weather it is an unremarkable mountain highway. After a storm it is a real snow-country drive, so carry chains or run proper winter tires and add margin. On heavy powder mornings the road can slow down, which is one more reason to base up the corridor if skiing is the whole point of the trip.

Should you stay at the mountain or in town?

This decision shapes the whole feel of a Purgatory trip. Slopeside and the US-550 corridor means condos, lodges and vacation rentals around Purgatory and Tamarron, which brings ski-in convenience and quiet mountain evenings. Downtown Durango puts restaurants, breweries and Main Avenue on foot, at the cost of a daily commute up to the snow.

Is Purgatory worth visiting in summer?

Yes, and the summer side surprises people. Come in July and the lifts still turn, with a coaster, a bike park and a slide on offer, so a non-skier gets a full day.

• The Inferno Mountain Coaster threads down through the trees, an alpine coaster that is a hit with kids.
• Scenic chairlift rides carry you up for the view without the effort.
• Mountain biking runs from lift-served downhill flow trails to cross-country routes.
• The area's only alpine slide rounds out a day that works for a wide range of ages, per the resort.

Is Purgatory good for families with kids?

Few Colorado resorts are as quietly family-friendly. The gentle progression terrain, the ski-and-ride school, the summer coaster and slide, and the easy vibe make it simple to bring a range of ages. How does Purgatory compare to Vail or Aspen?

Against the famous I-70 resorts you give up sheer size, above-treeline bowls and the buzzy resort-town scene. In return you get shorter lift lines, lower prices on tickets and lodging, a far calmer drive and a mountain that is more fun for intermediates and families than most of the big names. A few local pointers

• Buy online, early. There is no window rate, and prices climb as your date gets closer.
• Ski the shoulders. The weeks bracketing the winter holidays deliver the same mountain with a fraction of the crowd.
• Bring sun protection. Snow glare at this elevation is real.
• Acclimate. The base sits near 8,800 feet. Take it easy on day one.
