DRO is the code. The full name is Durango-La Plata County Airport, and it sits about 15 road miles southeast of downtown on Airport Road. Fly American and your nonstop comes from Dallas-Fort Worth or Phoenix, every day. Fly United and it comes from Denver, daily, with a Houston flight on Wednesdays and Saturdays from Dec. 19, 2026 through March 27, 2027. Parking: the first hour is free, then $1 per half hour, never more than $10 a day.
Every fact below comes from the airport, the City of Durango, the airlines or local news, and was checked in October 2026. For the wider picture of reaching town by road or air, start with our guide to getting to Durango.
Which airlines fly to Durango, and where do they go?
Two airlines serve DRO, and between them they fly four nonstop routes. The airport's airline page lists no one else.
| Airline | Nonstop to | When | Air miles | Typical flight time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United | Denver (DEN) | Year-round, up to six flights a day | 250 | About 1 hour |
| American | Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) | Year-round, daily | 673 | About 2 hours |
| American | Phoenix (PHX) | Year-round, daily | 352 | About 1 hour 15 minutes |
| United | Houston (IAH) | Seasonal; this winter Wednesdays and Saturdays, Dec. 19, 2026 to March 27, 2027 | 868 | About 2 hours 45 minutes |
Air miles are our own great-circle math from DRO. Flight times for Denver, Dallas and Phoenix are our estimates from those distances, so check your itinerary. The Houston time comes from United's posted schedule: flight UA6114 leaves Durango at 12:07 p.m. and lands at 3:48 p.m. Houston time, and Houston is an hour ahead. The "up to six a day" figure for Denver is from a City of Durango announcement.
Denver is the workhorse. Wikipedia's summary of federal route data shows about 157,600 passengers on the Denver route between February 2025 and January 2026, against about 72,700 for Dallas, 50,500 for Phoenix and 3,700 for Houston. The airport counted 563,009 travelers in 2025, up 13% from 2024, the Durango Herald reported.
The winter Houston flights are not a sure thing from year to year. United's October announcement says a minimum revenue guarantee backs them, funded by city lodgers tax plus Purgatory Resort, Durango Hot Springs and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The airport's director said strong demand would make more winter Houston service likelier. Because the flights run twice a week, a cancelled Wednesday flight can leave you waiting until Saturday for the next nonstop.
How long is the flight from Denver to Durango?
One hour in the air, on United, the only airline with a nonstop between the two. Driving? Visit Durango's mileage chart gives 342 miles and 6.5 hours. Fly, and you get most of a day back. That gap is why almost every visitor covers the last leg by air.
How do you find and book flights to Durango?
Book through United or American directly, then compare fares from other airports before you pay. The airport links each airline from its airline page. United reservations are 800-864-8331 and American's are 800-433-7300. From most U.S. cities, a flight to Durango means one connection through Denver, Dallas, Phoenix or Houston.
Fares vary by date, so we do not quote any. Price the same dates into at least two other airports before booking. The decision table later in this guide shows what a cheaper fare at Farmington or Montrose costs you in drive time.
How far is Durango Airport from downtown?
About 15 road miles, which takes 25 to 35 minutes. Published figures disagree, so here they are side by side:
- FAA records, as shown on AirNav, say 10 miles southeast of Durango. That is a straight line.
- Wikipedia says about 12 miles, also a straight line.
- The airport's own cost calculator assumes 30 miles and 45 minutes round trip.
- Avis lists its airport counter as 15.31 miles from the city center.
- A routing check from Main Avenue at 11th Street came out at 16.8 road miles.
The airport sits at 6,689 feet. To reach Purgatory from DRO, plan on about 43 road miles. A routing check puts that at an hour or more in good weather. If your hotel is at the resort, our Purgatory lodging guide covers the beds nearest the lifts, and the Purgatory Resort guide covers the mountain.
How much does parking cost at Durango Airport?
Parking is $10 per 24 hours, or $15 during two holiday windows. Both lots are cashless: you pay by credit card, debit card or tap-to-pay, as posted on the airport's parking page.
| Length of time | Cost |
|---|---|
| First 60 minutes | Free |
| Each additional 30 minutes | $1.00 |
| Maximum per 24 hours | $10.00 |
| Maximum per 24 hours, Nov. 23 to Dec. 2, 2026 and Dec. 23, 2026 to Jan. 1, 2027 | $15.00 |
Do the math before a long trip. Four days costs $40, a week costs $70, and two weeks costs $140. A full week inside the Christmas window costs $105. One catch from the airport: extra-day charges start at the hour you drove in, so leaving one minute into a new 24-hour period buys you another full day.
There are EV charging spots in the first six spaces of the south lot. They are Level 1 (120V), free with paid parking, and you bring your own cord. No oversized vehicles are allowed, since each must fit in one standard space.
How do you get from Durango Airport to town or Purgatory?
Line up your ride before you leave home. The airport warns that on-demand requests can mean a lengthy wait, and its ground transportation page names more than a dozen providers, from Uber and Lyft to local cab companies.
| Option | How to book | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Rental car | Alamo, National, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and Dollar; see our Durango car rental guide | Varies by date |
| Purgatory Transportation shuttle | Reserve 24 hours ahead, 970-426-7282 | $150 minimum for 1-2 passengers, $50 each for 3-4, $40 each for 5-9, $25 each for 10-14 |
| Uber and Lyft | Phone app | Not listed |
| Taxis and car services | La Plata's Cab 970-749-9991, A1 Taxi 970-585-4903, Animas Transportation 970-259-1315, Mountain Limo 888-546-6894 | Not listed |
| Hotel courtesy shuttle | Ask your hotel before you book | Not listed |
The shuttle fare is per booking, not per person, which makes the group size matter. Two travelers pay $75 each. A party of three pays $150, the same as a party of two. Four pay $200. The resort's transportation page says rides can be shared with other parties, cancellations cost $25, and seniors 65+ and military save 10%. That page still mentions the 2025-26 season, so confirm current fares when you book.
City buses are no help here. None of Durango Transit's six routes stops at the airport. Buck Horn Limousine, a local car service with a Durango listing, is one of the providers the airport names.
What is inside the Durango Airport terminal?
A newer building than the one most visitors remember. The airport opened Phase 1B2 of its terminal project on May 15, 2026, adding a vaulted ceiling, new security checkpoints and a new baggage claim, per the Herald. The airport says the project has run since 2021 and Phase 1B construction started in October 2024 with a 27-month schedule. The director told the Herald the work would finish by the end of 2026. Those two timelines differ by a month or so, so expect some construction noise at the edges.
What you can count on:
- Security: Allow at least 90 minutes before departure for check-in and TSA. Check bags no later than 45 minutes before departure. Be at the gate 30 minutes ahead.
- Wi-Fi: Free throughout the terminal on the DRO_WiFi network.
- Food: Sky Dine runs the concessions. The Steamworks Hub opened past security in October 2026, with a short menu of burgers, nachos, fish and chips, HomeSlice pizza by the slice and Steamworks beer. Our Steamworks guide covers the downtown original.
- Pets: Leashed in the terminal. A grassy walking area with a clean-up station sits at the north end of the rental car lot.
What happens when winter weather hits Durango Airport?
One Friday storm shows how bad it can get. United flight 5952 was due out at 3:25 p.m. and left seven hours and two minutes late, the Herald reported. On flight 5400, 68 passengers boarded around 5:45 p.m., and one passenger's father said the plane did not leave until 10:45 or later. SkyWest, which flew both, said passengers were offered chances to get off. Crews pointed to a shortage of de-icing fluid. Aviation Director Tony Vicari said the airport clears the tarmac, but airlines alone are responsible for de-icing and deplaning.
Four habits cut the risk:
- Fly out on the first flight of the day, so a delay has room to absorb.
- Leave a night of slack before any flight you cannot miss, such as an international departure.
- Keep your ticket on one reservation so the airline owns the rebooking.
- Watch the road too. If flights fail, US-550 and US-160 can fail with them, so check CDOT's CoTrip before any pass, and see the Durango in winter guide.
Which airport should you fly into for Durango?
DRO for most trips. The table shows what each alternative costs you in road miles.
| Airport | Miles from downtown Durango | Drive, dry roads | Airline service | Fly in here if... |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Durango (DRO) | About 15 | 25-35 minutes | United and American, four nonstops | You want the shortest drive or you are skiing Purgatory |
| Farmington, NM (FMN) | About 53 | About 1 hour 15 minutes | Daily United Express to Denver, per the City of Farmington | DRO fares are high and you only need Denver |
| Cortez (CEZ) | About 50 | About 1 hour | Denver Air Connection runs the ticket counter | Mesa Verde is your first stop |
| Montrose (MTJ) | About 110 | About 2 hours 45 minutes | 14 winter nonstops from 12 hubs on four airlines, per the airport | You also plan to visit Telluride or Ouray |
| Albuquerque (ABQ) | 220 | About 3.5 hours | Many airlines | You want a road trip and the most fare choices |
| Denver (DEN) | 342 | About 6.5 hours | Many airlines | Rarely; fly Denver to Durango instead |
Drive times for Farmington, Cortez and Montrose are routing estimates with no weather or traffic. Albuquerque and Denver come from Visit Durango's mileage chart. The Montrose drive crosses three passes on US-550, which our Million Dollar Highway guide covers, and that makes it a poor choice in a storm.
The airport's own cost calculator is marketing, but its arithmetic is worth seeing. At the IRS rate of 72.5 cents a mile, a round trip from Durango costs about $22 to reach DRO, $315 to reach Albuquerque and $521 to reach Denver, before parking. It also counts 45 minutes of your time for DRO, 7 hours for Albuquerque and 12.5 hours for Denver. A fare at another airport has to be cheaper by at least that much to win.
