Downtown and Main Avenue
The historic core is where most first-timers should land. The Strater Hotel opened in 1887 and has belonged to Historic Hotels of America since 1989. The Rochester Hotel and the General Palmer Hotel sit within a few blocks. As of October 2026 the Strater averages 4.5 stars across 1,803 Google reviews, and the Rochester 4.9 across 463.
The Durango & Silverton depot went up in January 1882 and still works as a depot, at the south end of those blocks. Booked on an early departure? A room within walking distance buys you an unhurried breakfast.
North Main Avenue and Animas View Drive
Head north on Main and the street numbers climb into the 3000 block, where the value motels live. Siesta Motel (4.7 stars, 597 reviews) and Adventure Inn (4.6, 630) both sit here. Several raft outfitters work from Animas View Drive, so a morning float starts a short drive away.
Purgatory and the U.S. 550 corridor
Purgatory opened in 1965, 25 miles north of town, and tops out at 10,822 feet with roughly 260 inches of snow in an average year. Most beds there are condos rented out by their owners. Hermosa and the Animas Valley
Hermosa is the community on U.S. 550 where Hermosa Creek meets the Animas River, and the narrow-gauge line keeps a water stop there. The valley suits travelers with RVs and anyone who wants morning quiet: Alpen Rose RV Park has 687 Google reviews at 4.5 stars.
Vallecito Lake
Vallecito is a reservoir, not a town stay. The lake covers 2,720 acres at about 7,665 feet, roughly 20 miles northeast of Durango and 13 miles north of Bayfield. Beds up there mostly mean cabins, like Pine River Lodge (4.8 stars, 295 reviews). Treat it as its own lake weekend, not a side trip from a downtown hotel.
Hotel, motel, cabin or rental: which should you book?
- Hotels. Concentrated downtown, with the most character and the most services. Compare them in the hotel listings.

How much do Durango lodging rates swing by season?
Enough that the same room can be a very different purchase in July than in April, so we do not print nightly rates here. They move too fast. Pull one room for a July Saturday and an April Tuesday and compare for yourself.

Common questions about where to stay in Durango
Is it better to stay in Durango or at Purgatory?
Stay in Durango unless skiing is the whole trip. Downtown has the restaurants, the train and the river, while Purgatory is 25 miles up U.S. 550 with far fewer places to eat.
Do you need a car if you stay downtown?
Not for downtown itself. The depot, Main Avenue and the Animas River Trail are walkable, but Mesa Verde (about 35 miles west), Purgatory and the Silverton side of the mountains need a car or a guided tour.
When should you book Durango lodging?
Book as soon as your dates are fixed for July, ski weekends and late-September color weeks. Spring and early December rarely need the same lead time, though a few seasonal properties close, so confirm before you commit.
Is Vallecito Lake worth staying at instead of Durango?
Only if the lake is the point. You will drive to reach Durango's restaurants and the train, so treat Vallecito as a separate lake trip or a quiet add-on night.
