Plan your trip around Snowdown if you want a winter party, the Bluegrass Meltdown for spring music, Iron Horse for the cyclist crowd, Fiesta Days for rodeo, and Polar Express for the holidays. Durango packs a festival into almost every month, and the biggest ones sell out rooms. Dates below come from each event's official site, and anything not yet announced is marked "usually."

What happens at Snowdown?
Snowdown is Durango's winter carnival, and it's weird in the best way. The official Snowdown site lists the 2027 dates as January 29 to February 7, with the theme "Chillin' With My Villains." Follies shows run January 29 and 30 and February 5 and 6. The Fashion Do's & Don'ts show is February 3, the Light Parade is February 5, and the Chili Cookoff and Bloody Mary Contest is February 6. What is the Durango Bluegrass Meltdown?
It's a bluegrass festival held in downtown Durango, and the next one is April 16 to 18, 2027. The 2026 schedule gives you the flavor: a free Friday kickoff concert at Ernie's at 11th Street Station, a contra dance, a band contest, and a Saturday showcase at the Durango Arts Center on East 2nd Avenue. Expect a similar mix next spring, and watch the site for the lineup.
What is the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic?
It's a bike race against a steam train. The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic has run since 1971 on Memorial Day weekend, and riders climb two 10,000-foot passes on the way to Silverton. In 2027 the weekend is May 29 and 30.
Saturday is the big day. Riders can take the untimed 50-mile Citizen Tour to Silverton, race the same course against the clock, or spin the 25-mile Quarter Horse up to Purgatory. Sunday swaps pavement for dirt: a 55-mile gravel race, and a mountain bike race with laps through Steamworks Brewery. You don't have to ride, either. What are Fiesta Days, and when should you go?
Fiesta Days is Durango's oldest community celebration, dating to 1935, when it began as the Spanish Trails Fiesta. It's held each July at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, and the rodeo's own site lists a queen contest, rodeo, barbecue and pie auction, and a street dance. Exact 2027 dates aren't out yet, so plan on July and check back.
Also usually in July: Music in the Mountains. The 2026 festival ran July 9 to August 2, with orchestra concerts at the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall. Our summer guide covers the rest of the season, including Animas River Days, which was held May 30 and 31 in 2026.
Is there a farmers market?
Yes, and it's a good reason to be in town on a Saturday. Downtown Durango's listing says the 2026 market ran Saturdays from 8am to noon, May 9 through October 31, at the TBK Bank lot at 259 W 9th Street. On the second Saturday of each month it moves to Main Avenue. Dogs aren't allowed. Look for the same May-to-October rhythm in 2027.
What happens in the fall and holidays?
The Durango Cowboy Gathering marks 37 years downtown, and the 2026 edition ran September 30 to October 3 with music, poetry, storytelling and horse events. Pair it with the aspens; our fall colors guide has the timing.
The holidays start early. Downtown Durango lists Singing with Santa on November 27, Noel Night on Friday, December 4, the Festival of Trees December 4 to 6, and the Nutcracker December 11 to 13. The Polar Express train runs November 20 through January 2, and the railroad's own page says it's roughly 65 minutes of steam train, with pajamas encouraged.
How should you plan around Durango events?
Book lodging first for Snowdown and Iron Horse weekends, since both fill downtown. Confirm dates on each official site within a few months of travel. Leave slack for weather, too, because mountain storms can move an outdoor day.
