Where do you eat dinner in Silverton?
Two places carry most of the evening trade.
Alpine Tavern, at 1151 Greene Street, is the newer name on the strip. The space used to be Avalanche Brewing. The Silverton Standard reported that new owner Shiloh Sams closed the deal on April 22, 2025. If you read an older guide that sends you to Avalanche, that is why you cannot find it.
Eureka Station, at 1225 Blair Street, leans into the town's Cornish mining roots. Listing sites show dinner hours of 4:30 to 9pm, Wednesday through Sunday. Call before you walk over on a Monday or Tuesday.
Is Handlebars worth a stop?
Yes, if the calendar allows. The Boden family opened it in 1989, and its own history page describes a wild-west room of roulette wheels and bordello stories. Look for the Model T parked out front. Its homepage lists lunch and dinner daily from 10:30am to 8pm, May through October.
Show up in December and the door will be locked. Show up in July and you will see why people keep coming back.
How do you eat well on the train layover?
Plan the meal before the whistle blows. The railroad's 2026 schedule is a 9.25-hour round trip with a two-hour stop in Silverton, from May 2 through November 1. Two hours sounds generous until a line forms.
Pick one place, walk straight there and order fast. Handlebars, with its lunch menu of soup, burgers and chili, suits a summer stop. Golden Block works if the group wants pizza. Coffee Bear is the grab-and-go choice for anyone who ate a big breakfast in Durango. Greene Street sits a short walk from the depot, so nothing here needs a car.
What changes in winter?
Plenty. The full train doesn't reach town in winter, so most visitors drive. Kendall Mountain Lodge notes that Silverton Mountain's guided skiing for 2026-27 runs December 31 through April 11, Thursday to Sunday, and the town's skijoring races fall on February 13 and 14, 2027. Expect the year-round places to fill on those weekends. Handlebars will be dark by then, so don't plan a winter dinner around it, and call the day you drive up, because hours in a town this size can change on a whim.
Should you stay the night?
If you can, yes. You'll get the evening instead of a rushed meal squeezed in before the drive back to Durango, and every dinner spot on this list is a short walk from a bed.
