Which Durango tour or outfitter should you book?

Book a Lower Animas raft trip for a family day, a guided jeep tour for the San Juan backcountry, and a zipline course if you want height without a long hike. Match the trip to the least experienced person in your group, then compare outfitters by review count and what the price includes.

Most of Durango's big operators run several of these under one roof, so a rafting company can often build you a two-sport day.

How does rafting the Animas River work?

The Animas is two rivers. Through Durango it runs Class II-III, which is the friendly family float. Upstream, between Silverton and the Tacoma power plant, it becomes a Class IV-V run of roughly 24 miles, reached by the narrow-gauge train. The Whitewatr rafting directory says the Upper Animas only runs in a short high-water window, typically mid-June to mid-July.

The wider season for town floats runs late April through August, because the river is fed by snowmelt. Entry-level trips on the Whitewatr directory started between $59 and $79 per person in October 2026, though prices change with the season and trip length.

Three outfitters carry the biggest review counts in our listings: Durango Rivertrippers (5.0 stars, 4,771 reviews), Mild to Wild (4.9, 2,983) and Mountain Waters Rafting (5.0, 1,566). Browse them all under raft trip outfitters or read our rafting guide.

What is a jeep tour from Durango like?

You ride, the guide drives. The famous route is the Alpine Loop, a 4x4-only road that links Lake City, Silverton and Ouray and climbs as high as 12,800 feet. The Colorado Department of Transportation calls it 63 miles long, a 4 to 6 hour drive, and says its two 12,000-foot passes, Cinnamon and Engineer, need a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle. A guide is the sensible way to do that if you don't own one.

Colorado Outback Adventures (5.0 stars, 1,526 reviews) and Southwest Raft and Jeep both run jeep tours out of Durango. Ask whether you can pair a morning on the river with an afternoon in the mountains.

Which zipline near Durango is right for you?

It depends on how much of your day you want to spend. Soaring Tree Top Adventures is reachable only by train and runs 27 spans over about 5.5 hours. Durango Adventures and Zipline Tours has a 12-line course you can drive to, about 2.5 to 3 hours. Our zipline guide compares the two.

Is fishing on the Animas worth a guide?

Probably, if you are new to it. Colorado has designated a stretch of the Animas through Durango as Gold Medal trout water, its top rating. Heads Up Flyfishing (5.0 stars, 139 reviews) can sort out flies, access and the rules for you. Anglers 16 or older need a Colorado fishing license either way.

How do you choose an outfitter?

  • Match the water or road to the group. Be honest about the weakest swimmer or the most nervous passenger.
  • Ask what is included. Gear, transport, photos and lunch vary.
  • Check age and weight minimums. They differ by trip and by river level.
  • Ask about changes. Water levels and weather can move a trip, so read the cancellation terms.
  • Read recent reviews. Look for the specific trip you are booking, not the company's overall score.
