How much cannabis can you buy in Colorado?
You can buy 1 ounce at a time, and a store can sell you 8 grams of concentrate per day. The 1-ounce limit is on the state laws page. The concentrate cap comes from the Office of Legislative Legal Services, reviewed in October 2025. The state lists no separate limit for visitors.
You can hold 2 ounces in all. More than that can bring charges and fines. Tax is extra, too. The state adds a 15% retail sales tax at the register, so your total will top the shelf price.

Where can you use cannabis in Durango?
Only on private property, and only if the owner says yes. Colorado bans use in public. That means no smoking, eating or vaping on sidewalks, in parks, at ski resorts, in restaurants or bars, or in the shared areas of apartment buildings (state laws).
Federal land is a trap for hikers. Cannabis is still illegal under federal law, so using it in a national park or national forest breaks the rules, ski slopes included. That matters here, because plenty of Durango trailheads start on forest land.
Hotels can say no. So can landlords. Call before you shop. Ask if the place allows cannabis, and if it allows smoking at all. A private rental that says yes in writing is your safest bet.
Can you take cannabis home or on a plane?
No. Leaving Colorado with any cannabis is against the law. You also can't bring it into Denver International Airport or any other airport (state travel rules). That includes the airport in Durango. Buy only what you'll use on the trip.
Can you drive after using cannabis in Colorado?
No. Driving high is illegal, even though weed is legal. Per the state's driving page, you can get a DUI or DWAI if it affects your driving "to the slightest degree." A blood test showing 5 nanograms per milliliter or more of active delta-9 THC lets a court assume you were impaired.
Open packages count, too. Nobody in the car can open cannabis and use it, even when parked.
The state offers wait times and calls them estimates:
- Smoked, up to 35 milligrams of THC: wait at least six hours before you drive or bike.
- Eaten or drunk, up to 18 milligrams: wait at least eight hours.

Don't mix it with drinks. The state says alcohol and cannabis together likely impair you more than either one alone (driving and traveling). So skip the beers on night one.
