Durango mountain biking starts a few blocks from Main Avenue. The Horse Gulch trail system has 22 trails, per Visit Durango, and the trailhead sits off 8th Avenue and 3rd Street. The town also hosted the first UCI-organized mountain bike world championships in 1990, so locals take their singletrack seriously. Where can you ride without a car?
Start with Horse Gulch. Durango Trails says the system suits all levels, and the first half mile is a climb that many people simply walk. Up in the meadow, signs suggest routes. Families and newer riders should stick to the Meadow Loop, which is short and flat. Visit Durango points experienced riders toward steeper lines such as Send It Descent, Stacy's Loop, Mike's Trail and Ben's Down N Out. Summer gets hot up there, so carry plenty of water.
Overend Mountain Park, west of downtown, is the other local favorite. It began in the late 1990s as the old Test Track, where riders tried out new bike ideas, and a group including Ned Overend helped the city buy the land. The park now covers about 300 acres of berms, bridges and jumps. Star Wars is a flume-like downhill. Hogsback and Hidden Valley give you views over town. Dalla Mountain Park is a separate city park, so don't mix them up on a map. The city's trails page lists every system.
Both networks make a good first-day ride while your lungs adjust to 6,500 feet.
Where is the best backcountry riding?
Two names come up first.
Hermosa Creek Trail. The Forest Service calls it a premier backcountry singletrack trail. It runs 19 miles one way, dropping from 8,880 feet at the upper trailhead to 7,820 feet at the lower one. Don't expect a pure downhill. Durango Trails warns there is real climbing, so leave a full day and book a shuttle. Read the Forest Service page for damage and burned-area hazards first, since the 2018 416 Fire burned the watershed.
Colorado Trail at Junction Creek. This is where the 500-mile Colorado Trail finishes. Durango Trails rates the stretch as fine for most skill levels. You roll along flat beside the creek for about 2.5 miles, then the switchbacks start. Ride to High Point and back and plan on four to five hours.
What about the lift-served bike park?
Purgatory Resort, about 26 miles north on US-550, reopened its bike park for summer 2026 after a hiatus, according to the resort. Helmets are required, a day ticket or pass is needed even if you pedal up, and the trails close Monday through Wednesday for maintenance. - Mountain Bike Specialists, 949 Main Ave (4.9, 102 reviews), is a long-running independent shop that sells bikes and e-bikes. Ask about rentals.
- Durango Mountain Bike Tours, 598 Main Ave Suite C (5.0, 25), offers guided rides, rental bikes on tour packages and a Hermosa Creek shuttle ride, per its site.
- Roll ebike and paddle board, 1259 Main Ave (4.9, 131), rents e-bikes by the hour and can deliver to the Animas River Trail.
- Durango Outdoor Exchange, 3677 Main Ave, is a consignment shop for used gear.

When should you plan your trip?
The big date for 2027 is the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic on Memorial Weekend. Per the race site, Saturday, May 29 brings the 50-mile Citizen Tour and the road race from Durango to Silverton. On Sunday, May 30, the La Strada La Plata gravel race and a mountain bike race around Fort Lewis College and Chapman Hill take over town. Book lodging early, and check the race site for highway closures.
In summer, ride early. Trails get hot, and afternoon storms are a risk on exposed ridges. Fall is a good time to stay on dirt, and our fall colors guide shows what to see.
