Vallecito Lake is where Durango goes when the Animas gets too crowded. It's a 2,720-acre reservoir tucked against the Weminuche Wilderness, about 45 minutes from town, with a marina, six Forest Service campgrounds and some of the best mixed-species fishing in southwest Colorado. You can do it as a day trip or a week. Here is what to know before you drive up County Road 501.
How far is Vallecito Lake from Durango?
About 23 miles northeast, or a 40 to 45 minute drive. The Vallecito Marina says it sits 40 minutes from downtown Durango and 25 minutes from Bayfield, and the GoVallecito guide lists 45 minutes. There is one paved route in, County Road 501, and Forest Service directions send you out Florida Road (County Road 240) from the north end of Durango before you turn onto 501.
Fill your tank in Durango anyway. The Country Market in Vallecito sells gas and propane, but you don't want to count on it at closing time.
What is Vallecito Reservoir?
It's a working reservoir first and a playground second. The Bureau of Reclamation built Vallecito Dam between 1938 and 1941 to store Pine River runoff for farms downstream, and the Pine River Irrigation District runs it today. At full pool the lake covers 2,720 acres at 7,665 feet, with about 12 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 120 feet, per the GoVallecito facts page. Because the district draws it down every year, the water line drops through summer and fall, which changes beach and ramp access.
What can you do at Vallecito Lake?
| Activity | The short version |

| Boating | Marina rents fishing boats and pontoons; public ramp May 1 to October 31 |
| Paddling | Kayaks and SUPs rent at the marina |

| Camping | Six Forest Service campgrounds plus private RV parks |
| Winter | Ice fishing and about 15 km of groomed Nordic trails |
Is the fishing at Vallecito Lake any good?
It's the main draw. Colorado Parks and Wildlife says the reservoir once produced a state record northern pike, that trophy pike are still caught, and that rainbow trout run in the quality size range. Kokanee salmon and rainbows are stocked every year. For species, seasons and rules, read our Durango fishing guide.
You'll need two permits:
- Colorado fishing license. Required for anglers 16 and older.
- Pine River Irrigation District recreation permit. Required for every vehicle, with district permits starting at $6 a day. Buy it online and set the receipt on the driver-side dashboard, as the district instructs.
How do you get on the water?
Rent a boat or launch your own. The marina is the only one on the lake, and it rents fishing boats, pontoons, kayaks and SUPs from May through September, weather and business permitting. If you're trailering a boat, the public ramp is open May 1 through October 31, and every trailered or motorized boat gets inspected for aquatic nuisance species before it launches. Show up clean, drained and dry.
Kayaks and SUPs need only the vehicle permit, per the GoVallecito permit guide. There's no lifeguarded beach, so swimming happens near day-use areas, and the water is cold well into summer. Our paddleboarding guide covers life jacket rules, which apply here too.
Where can you camp at Vallecito Lake?
You have six Forest Service campgrounds to pick from: Graham Creek, Middle Mountain, North Canyon, Pine Point, Pine River and Vallecito. Two details from the Forest Service pages for Vallecito Campground and Graham Creek:
- Vallecito Campground. It has 80 shaded sites in four loops, sits next to the Weminuche Wilderness and costs $32 for a standard site. Trailhead parking for the Vallecito Creek Trail is at the entrance.
- Graham Creek Campground. It has 25 sites, takes RVs up to 35 feet, and the hillside sites sit about 100 yards from the high-water line. The road in is steep.
Both are open roughly May through September, and quiet hours run 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Reserve ahead on Recreation.gov for summer weekends. If you'd rather have a roof, Pine River Lodge and Junction West Vallecito Resort are listed on our site, and our cabins and vacation rentals guide and camping guide cover other options.
What is the story behind the 2002 Missionary Ridge fire?
If you wonder why a ring of chainsaw sculptures stands around the lake, this is why. Per the Colorado Encyclopedia, the Missionary Ridge Fire:
- began June 9, 2002, northeast of Durango;
- burned until July 15;
- destroyed 46 houses and cabins;
- charred roughly 73,000 acres of La Plata County forest;
- killed one firefighter.
Fourteen chainsaw sculptures now memorialize it. The Tour of Carvings is free, self-guided and open year-round, and kids treat it as a scavenger hunt you can do from the car.
Where can you eat near the lake?
Dining right at the lake is limited. The GoVallecito guide lists the Weminuche Woodfire Grill for wood-fired pizza and live music, and the Country Market, which has groceries, a kitchen, gas and propane. Kitchens keep shorter hours off-season, so check before you go. Bayfield is about 20 minutes away and Durango about 45 for fuller dining, and our restaurant guide lists the options in town. Packing a cooler is not a bad plan.
Which hikes start at Vallecito?
Vallecito is the main southern gateway to the Weminuche Wilderness, Colorado's largest. The Forest Service says the Vallecito Creek Trail starts at the Vallecito Campground entrance and is a major access point, with no mountain bikes or motorized vehicles allowed. The Lake Eileen Trail also leaves from there and leads through aspens to a shallow lake covered with water lilies. A flood in October 2025 washed out the Middle Bridge on the Vallecito Creek Trail, according to the GoVallecito guide, so check current trail status before you plan a long day.
How does Vallecito compare with Lemon Reservoir?
- Lemon Reservoir: smaller and closer, about 16 miles from Durango per Visit Durango, with cold runoff water.
- Vallecito Reservoir: 2,720 acres at full pool, plus the marina and six Forest Service campgrounds.
- Our pick: Lemon for a calm paddle, Vallecito for a full day of boating and fishing.
Is Vallecito Lake worth visiting in winter?
Yes, if you like quiet. County Road 501 is plowed as a first-priority road, but it ices before the highway does. The public boat ramp and the Forest Service campgrounds are closed after October 31. What stays open: the Country Market, some cabins, ice fishing when the ice sets up, and roughly 15 kilometers of Nordic trails groomed by the Vallecito Nordic Club. Never trust the ice without checking locally, and call ahead, because many businesses close. See our Durango in winter guide for more.
