How long does each Durango activity take?
| Activity | Best season | Time to plan | Distance from downtown |
|---|
| Durango & Silverton train | Summer for the full route, winter runs shorter | Most of a day | Departs from the Main Avenue depot |
| Rafting the Animas | Late April through August | 2-3 hours on the water for a town float | Starts in town |
| Mesa Verde National Park | Year-round, some tours seasonal | A full day | About 35 miles west |
| Purgatory ski resort | Ski season, plus summer lift days | Half to full day | 25 miles north on U.S. 550 |
| Hot springs | Year-round | 2-3 hours | North of town |
| Main Avenue and the Animas River Trail | Year-round | 2-4 hours | Downtown |
Why is the narrow-gauge train the top pick?
It is the one experience with no real substitute. The line is 45 miles long, has run between Durango and Silverton since 1882, and follows a canyon the highway cannot reach. In winter the trains turn around at the Cascade Wye instead of going all the way to Silverton, so confirm the route for your dates. Read our train guide before booking, because summer and fall seats sell out.
Where do you go rafting near Durango?
Straight through town. The Lower Animas is a Class II-III float that most families can handle, with trips running two to three hours. The Upper Animas near Silverton is a Class IV-V expedition with a short high-water window, run only by outfitters with the permits. Tell your outfitter which one you want.
The outfitters with the biggest review counts, as of October 2026, are Durango Rivertrippers (5.0 stars, 4,771 reviews), Mild to Wild (4.9, 2,983) and Mountain Waters Rafting (5.0, 1,566). Our rafting guide explains how to choose.
Is Mesa Verde worth a day trip from Durango?
Yes, but only with a full day set aside. The entrance is about 35 miles west of Durango. Inside, the park holds more than 5,000 archaeological sites, roughly 600 of them cliff dwellings. It was established in 1906 and named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Ranger-led cliff dwelling tours are ticketed and change by season, so read our Mesa Verde guide before you go.
What is there to do in Durango in winter?
Ski or ride at Purgatory, 25 miles north of town. The resort opened in 1965, tops out at 10,822 feet and averages around 260 inches of snow. Back in town, the hot springs are the standard reward, and Snowdown, the winter festival, keeps downtown lively. See our winter guide.
What can you do in Durango for free?
Walk or bike the paved Animas River Trail, wander Main Avenue, and browse the galleries downtown. The overlooks on the drives toward Silverton and Mesa Verde cost nothing either. The Million Dollar Highway, the 25-mile stretch of U.S. 550 between Silverton and Ouray, crosses 11,018-foot Red Mountain Pass.

How many days do you need in Durango?
Three days covers the essentials: one for the train or river, one for Mesa Verde, one for downtown and a shorter outdoor activity. Our 3-day itinerary lays it out hour by hour.
Is Durango good for a weekend trip?
Yes. A 48-hour visit fits one big adventure plus time downtown. See the weekend in Durango guide.
Can you see Mesa Verde and downtown in the same day?
Not comfortably. Mesa Verde takes a full day once you count the drive and the park roads, so treat it as its own day.
What is the best time of year to visit Durango?
Summer for rafting and the full train route, late September into early October for aspen color, and winter for skiing. Our best time to visit guide breaks down each season.
